Intelligence

Intelligence is a wondrous concept, one that is currently being explored in an amazing variety of fields. As Nations, we teach our young, view brilliance and success, and inadvertently set our own limitations, according to our cultures accepted set of beliefs. As I see it, each individual reflects unique aspects and qualities of an infinite source of intelligence, in an ever-evolving way, depending upon our own current set of beliefs about life. See It So presents stories in hopes of broadening the way we, and our children, see our own abilities to appreciate and reflect infinite Mind.

Multiple Intelligences

Psychologist Howard Gardener initially presented the theory of Multiple Intelligences in 1983. Among many such concepts presented in the last several hundred years, Gardener’s work is unique in it’s foundation of research in such fields as neuroanatomy, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, anthropology and other scientific fields. It has since gained broad recognition as an important perspective in understanding the human mind, and our propensities and capacities for varied sets of skills. Educators have increasingly embraced the recognition of at least eight specific ‘kinds of smart,’ as Thomas Armstrong refers to the various categories.

Many wonderful books are available by Howard Gardener, Thomas Armstrong, and others on the theory and it’s applications in education. The beauty of working with an awareness of Multiple Intelligences, especially in early childhood education, is the increased ability to identify specific propensities or natural inclinations in an individuals learning style, as well as to offer opportunities to develop each type of intelligence to a reasonable degree. Imagine how much richer our cultures, as well as how many more opportunities each of us would have, with this expanded educational nurturing.

Following is a brief description of the various categories or types of intelligence identified currently. Each of us naturally combines many of the aspects of any number of these types as we function daily. See if you can sense how various skills draw on these more specific types of intelligence.
